Add a backup key: three passkey prompts
WalletWallet holders·Updated
“Three passkey prompts. Nothing leaves your wallet.” Swaps pays the network fee.
Choose a place first
Keep the backup somewhere other than your wallet key: another device, another password manager or a security key. “Not where your wallet key is: the browser refuses that.”
Start
Choose “Add backup key” on your wallet’s home, or “Add” next to Backup key in Wallet options or Settings › Passkeys. Then choose “Create backup key”.
The three prompts
“Create the backup passkey”. Your browser asks where to save it. Choose the place you picked.
“Approve with your wallet key”. Choose “Swaps Wallet · …” (older wallets: “Swaps Tempo Wallet”) in the prompt. If that key is on your phone, your phone can approve from the prompt. Then: “Adding on Tempo, usually a few seconds.”
“Sign once with the backup”. On “Backup key added”, choose “Sign with backup key”, then pick your backup key in the prompt.
When Tempo shows it, Swaps says “Backup key confirmed” and names the key, for example “Saved as “Swaps backup key · Nov 3 · 7F3A”.” “That’s its name in your password manager. Another entry with a similar name has no power over this wallet.”
If something stops
- “That’s where your wallet key is”: choose another device or password manager. Nothing was added.
- “Passkey saved, not added yet”: “Try again” asks only for your wallet key’s approval.
- “Not confirmed yet”: your backup is added. Choose “Confirm backup key” when you’re ready.
- “Swaps can’t add another backup key”: this wallet used the adds Swaps pays for. Contact support.
Money
No money moves. Swaps pays the network fee to add the key. The check is a signature, with no fee and nothing to undo. You can delete the key later.
